Extracting Interaction-Created Surplus
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper demonstrates that the economic surplus which agents produce in bilateral interactions is extractable by an outside party having sufficient initial resources. The third party achieves this outcome using a class of ‘‘exclusive-interaction’’ contracts. A basic extractability result is shown to be robust to several extensions: competition among outside parties, multiplicity of interacting agents, and a dynamic extension with repeated opportunities to interact. Finally, some connections with the economic intermediation literature are drawn. Journal of Economic Literature Classification Number: C79 Q 2000 Academic Press

Surplus Extraction on Arbitrary Type Spaces
In this paper I study the possibility of full surplus extraction on arbitrary type spaces, with three main results: (i) I characterize full surplus extraction, (ii) I characterize full surplus extraction assuming that the surplus-extracting allocation is implementable, and (iii) I show that virtually full surplus extraction implies full surplus extraction. The characterizing condition in (ii) a...
متن کاملBargaining Power in Repeated Negotiations with Outside Options
For repeated ultimatum bargaining, the Folk Theorem of repeated game theory suggests that there are many equilibria, among them equilibria in which the second mover, say, the buyer, appropriates all the surplus. This paper shows that the presence of outside options in form of alternative trading partners eliminates some of these equilibria by reducing the cope for extracting surplus in repeated...
متن کاملThe Role of Agriculture in Economic Development: Visible and Invisible Surplus Transfers
The financial surplus of agriculture has been central to theories of the role of agriculture in economic development. Morrisson and Thorbecke (MT) have used a constant-price social accounting matrix (SAM) framework to rigorously measure the financial surplus of agriculture and decompose the mechanisms of surplus extraction. History and theory have, however, stressed the role of prices as an inv...
متن کاملOn the Formation of Capital and Wealth
We show modern information technology (in short IT) is the cause of rising income and wealth inequality since the 1970's and has contributed to slow growth of wages and decline in the natural rate. Hence, the source of most improvements in our living standards also causes social losses and rising inequality. We first study all US firms whose securities trade on public exchanges. Surplus wealth ...

We show (i) aggregate surp...
